Sen. Jim Webb (D-Virginia) has bravely proposed legislation to create a Blue Ribbon commission to conduct an 18-month, "top-to-bottom" review of America's criminal justice system with the goal of bringing U.S. incarceration rates in line with the rest of the civilized world.

The commission is to make sweeping recommendations for reform, and is tasked in particular with developing proposals to "restructure our approach to drug policy."

Enter unreconstructed drug warrior Sen. Chuck Grassley, who has released the text of an amendment that would ensure the commission not reach any conclusions that threaten 40 years of failure. The commission would be prohibited, thanks to Grassley, from examining any "policies that favor decriminalization of violations of the Controlled Substances Act or the legalization of any controlled substances."

So the Party-of-No, fresh from hyperventilating about supposed censorship, has one of its lead ass-hats propose an amendment to legislation under consideration, prohibiting not only any changes to existing law, but also prohibiting any discussion about whether such changes are necessary...

How does this NOT make Chuck Grassley the lead hypocrite of America's Hypocrite party?

Contact your representative, and tell them what you think of Grassley's proposal to censor discussion of drug war reforms...

Regardless of how one feels about this issue, this type of maneuvering should be called out and Grassley (tee-he) should be publicly lambasted for this bull@!$%#.

All Americans need to hold their representatives to a higher standard. We don't send our representatives to DC to prevent reasoned discussion! Congress is supposed to be a deliberative body, not a secret society.

Grassley, as well as any other Congress idiot, who puts forth such amendments should be made to explain publicly what such changes are needed and what is the justification for it. If all of these leeches were actually forced to explain their actions, we might see less of these kinds of moves or better yet, less of these type of people.

Whatever his motiviation, Grassley will have a big fan in organized crime. Those are the folks who will lose big bucks if/when the USA adopts a sane drug policy.

How can you review policies with an eye to reduce our prison population and NOT address our drug laws?

He can't block the bill. He can propose all the amendments he wants, but they don't have to be included in the bill.

What stupid games we play with peoples lives. 3 strikes and your out has put many smokers in prison for long stretches.

We need drug reform!!!

    ron c. baker sr.

in a country where a legalized drug, alcohol, has done more damage than any drug, with the exception of the methamphetamine epidemic, than most illegal drugs, especially pot.

i feel that, as an alcoholic in remission, as i call it, many who do have a drug problem could finally receive the help needed to get clean, rather than serve time in the can . if we reversed this policy of just locking up the offenders, and offered programs to help them with recovery, we would see instant results, and help people become responsible citizens again.

i know what it is like being addicted to a substance, in my case, alcohol. it is destructive to the individual, and to society as a whole. but, with help, in my case my God, i have become whole again (well, almost), and have regained my self-respect (well, almost), and i am again a contributing (well, almost) member of the human race.

everyone, regardless of the their individual addiction, or in the case of pot, just getting popped for a joint, can recover. i am making an exception for pot, because i personally feel that it is not an addictive drug, the the sense that meth, or heroin, or ALCOHOL, is !!!so please, be gentle with me if you disagree (i'm still fragile, hahaha).

    luv,

    ron

I believe the 'war on drugs' has been distorted, one sided and full of propaganda. I honestly believe that we need to reexamine the situation. Writing about it on the internetz is the start.

Please talk to people in meat space as well, let people know how you feel. We may not a complete solution, but more and more conversations will open the door, and let us know if forces are trying to keep that door shut.
