Police, saying they were responding to citizen complaints, carted away two large promotional photographs from the Abercrombie & Fitch store in Lynnhaven Mall on Saturday and cited the manager on obscenity charges.
Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman, said the seizure and the issuance of the summons came only after store management had not heeded warnings to remove the images.
The citation was issued under City Code Section 22.31, Bernstein said, which makes it a crime to display "obscene materials in a business that is open to juveniles."
Obscenity charge? Hell, yeah, I'd be @!$%#ing cursing up a God damn storm. I hope he sues the pants off them.
Bernstein confirmed that one depicts three shirtless young men from the back, walking through a field. The man in the lead appears to be about to pull up his jeans, which have slipped down enough to reveal his upper buttocks.
The same image is displayed on the Abercrombie Web site.
The other image is of a woman who is topless and whose "breast is displayed with her hand covering just the nipple portion," Bernstein said. "You could still pretty much see the rest of the breast."
I was hoping to be able to link to the "breast" photo, but unfortunately can't find it online. I have, however, seen it, since we have a huge framed copy of it hanging in our offices. It's not what I would call "obscene"-- especially given that it is even less revealing than the standard classic nude photography of Adams or Weston. It's certainly less obscene than much of what Abercrombie puts in its catalog. I think, in fact, that I have seen more revealing poses on broadcast television.
What's really obscene about A&F are their discriminatory hiring practices. I couldn't care less about their phony erotica. They've been hauled to court before but settled their cases rather than admit to their racialist hiring and promotion practices.
Seriously, you should write an article about that.
Thanks, but the NY Times already has. Black and brown employees were discriminated against by this company and given low visibility assignments because they wanted to project a "fresh faced," white, youthful collegiate look. Nevermind that Black and other ethnic people not only attend colleges but are among the trendsetters in music, clothing, and other facets of our society. A&F wasn't just doing this in a few stores, but across the country, east coast, west coast, and in the South.
Have they learned their lesson yet? I hope so. I haven't read about any new lawsuits lately. But pick up a recent catalogue and tell me, what do you see? Lots of shiny, happy, caucasian people posing suggestively.
You wouldn't happen to have the link, would you?
Sorry, but I don't know how to link articles. However at nytimes.com you can reach the newspaper and I typed in: Abercrombie & Fitch Sued
in the banner for "search" and it gave me the story, dated Nov. 17, 2004, about the bias suit. I've found that my attempts to seed links have not always been successful.( Please pardon my computer illiteracy.)
Out you go. Come back once you've had a good long gander at the ToS and Code of Honor. Thanks.
Why does America insist on allowing children to play with toy guns and G I Joe while simultaneously teaching them that the human body is obscene?
Exactly, the human body is not obscene. Prudes are ridiculous and they really piss me off. They wanna see obscene they should check out some of these videos on my computer. They'd have a @!$%#ing heart attack. Idiots.
The other image is of a woman who is topless and whose "breast is displayed with her hand covering just the nipple portion," Bernstein said. "You could still pretty much see the rest of the breast."
From the graphic description of the horrible obscenity given above I think this may be the photo in question.
Could be, but I think not. I'm fairly positive from the description that it's the one taken as almost a profile shot (maybe 3/4 view), that really just shows the woman from the bottom of the ribcage to the shoulder. Only one breast in the photo, and that's partially covered. But good try!
It's quite a bit closer to this Weston nude [don't click: horribly obscene photo linked]
You are correct iarnuocon.
The horrible obscenity can be seen here.
Oh my eyes! I am now defiled as I had no idea what a butt or a breast looked like before! And I'm sure that no kid under 21 has seen them either. After all, they ought to have to get their info out of National Geographic or biology textbooks same as we did. And of course there's no chance of them having seen one of them already. It's not as if biology is taught in schools or anything like that.
In other news, A and F profits set to go through the roof next quarter as teens flock to the stores to see what the fuss is about.
You've seen as much boob or butt crack on Saturday Night Live... if anybody even watches that anymore.
I once had a friend who really truly thought that in my life drawing classes, we looked at fully clothed models and imagined what they looked like naked. No amount of talking on my part could convince her otherwise, and she absolutely refused to drop in on one to see for herself. She was afraid she might see a naked woman (or worse, man).
I often wondered how her marriage worked out.
I wonder if Victoria's secret has every had any complaints? That's my hometown newspaper, and I know that's a pretty big mall with a large VS. They show pictures like that of women (not men) all the time.
My Sunday mornings will never be the same. I've been waking up and preparing for my Sunday while listening to Tim and Meet the Press for years. Although I never shared his political views, I've always had the greatest respect for his insight and talent at addressing the issues.
God Speed and God Bless Tim
Firstly, my condolences. I am a 20 year old college student (not of journalism, though Tim's reporting has often left me questioning why not) and I feel compelled to share my sadness over the death of one of the greatest journalists I have witnessed. When watching the news today, it is hard to filter out what is real and what is not; I have been a news addict for years, but I new that every Sunday I could count on Mr. Russert to ask the tough questions and present me with the facts and not with his own political persuasion. I wept when I turned on MSNBC for my politcial fix and saw this awful news. I was in a near fatal car wreck 4 days ago, and this has only strengthened my belief that life is so fragile and is to be appreciated and enjoyed -- it seems no one knew this better than Mr. Russert. Rest in Peace friend.

I hope this is that this is the right place to leave my comment about Tim Russet, I didn't know him personally, but I will miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I always looked forward to his Sunday morning program and I love NBC and MSNBC. He had a way of phrasing questions and comments so that I could understand the issues.
I love all of you, may God bless.
