The 2007 Newsvine Music Exchange

Get in on the action...

advertisement

Deadline has been extended to Friday, December 21st, at noon. See the update for the current list of participants.

Looking to expand your musical horizons? Trying to find that special someone who "gets" the music that you're into? Found some music that you love, and just want to spread the good news? This is the place.

Announcing the first annual Newsvine Music Exchange.

Here's how it works:

  • Send an email to NewsvineMusicExchange@gmail.com with "Sign me up" and your Newsvine username in the subject line, by midnight of December 14th, 2007.
  • I'll compose a list of participants, and send the list to everyone on December 15th.
  • Find your name on the list. Your Newsvine pal listed above your username will send his mix to you. You will send your mix to your Newsvine pal who is listed beneath your username.
  • Contact your Newsvine pals (message them through Newsvine!) and either ask for or supply a snail mail address for sending your mix to. If you're at the bottom of the list, send your mix to me. I will send my mix to the person at the top of the list.
  • Create your mix and mail to your Newsvine pal by December 31st.
  • Send a follow-up email to NewsvineMusicExchange@gmail.com when your mix arrives, letting me know you got it.

It's that simple. Once the majority of mixes have been received, I'll post a follow-up story, and we can discuss how it went. There's even help available-- see these recent stories on how to compose a good mix CD or tape by Newsvine's own Eric Atienza and Stolte-Sawa.

Format suggestions

  1. Blank CDs and mailers are cheap. Burn your mix to a CD.
  2. Create as a regular CD, not a collection of MP3s. This serves two purposes-- first, you should be selective in what you include. Don't make this a collection of "best of" songs that can be heard everyday on the Podunk-ville radio. Second, those of us who don't have MP3 capable car stereos will be able to listen to your mix while we drive to and from work.
  3. Include a track listing that gives song name, album name, and artist name (or similar identifying information). If you feel up to it, you might also include information about the band, why you chose the song, et cetera.

Good luck and have fun!

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I've done this a few times before on other sites, and have always wound up finding bands I'd never known about before. Here's to a good turnout!

I don't think it would be wise to mail a CD of the obnoxious tripe I listen to to someone, they might set the postal inspectors on me for mailing items unfit for mailing. Nice idea, though.

Gah! I just saw this! I'm in! Where do I sign? (I mean, I know where I sign, and I signed it, virtually, or whatever, but this is for rhetorical effect, so don't feel compelled to re-list the directions.)

    Good idea, iarn.

I somehow missed this, too. But I'd love to participate. I hope it's not too late.

Bah, I saw it and just forgot. I, also, hope it's not too late.

(And am I wrong or has Stacy been busy this afternoon?)

Ack! And after the emails already went out.

The lineup as it stands as of this minute:

        iarnuocon
        Stacy Malbon
        Whyren
        kymlee
        vicaxp Eric Atienza
        Viki Babbles Gonia
        stolte-sawa

Eric, shoot an email to vicaxp, and let him know he's mailing his CD to you, rather than to me. Ryan, you'll send yours to me, instead.

        Is everybody ok with this?

I just read through Stacy's email-- I'm ok with letting people in after the "deadline", but let's set a firm stop date of the 21st (noon) for additions. Additions will only change things for whoever is at the bottom of the current list, as they'll be sending their mix to a late addition, rather than to me.
